Screen Technology Guide

LCD vs OLED vs OEM — what's the difference?

Choosing the right screen technology is the single most important decision in an iPhone screen replacement. Here's what you need to know before you buy.

🔲

LCD Incell / TFT

Uses a backlight behind an IPS panel. Colours are decent, brightness is moderate. No true black. The most affordable option — ideal for budget repairs or secondary devices.

$15 – $45

OLED (Soft & Hard)

Each pixel emits its own light — true blacks, vibrant colour, deeper contrast, slimmer panel. Soft OLED is flexible; Hard OLED is more rigid and durable. Closest third-party experience to original.

$50 – $140
🍎

OEM Apple Refurbished

Original Apple panels pulled and refurbished. Preserves True Tone, full nit brightness, P3 wide colour, and Face/Touch ID integration. The gold standard — identical to factory.

$100 – $250

Pro tip: Check your original panel first

iPhones from the iPhone X onwards shipped with OLED panels. Replacing them with LCD will permanently disable True Tone and reduce maximum brightness. If you own an iPhone X, XS, 11 Pro, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, or 17 series — always choose an OLED or OEM replacement.

DIY Repair Guide

How to replace your iPhone screen at home

With the right tools and patience, you can replace most iPhone screens yourself in under an hour.

1

Power off completely

Hold the power button and slide to power off. Never work on a live device.

2

Remove the two pentalobe screws

Located on either side of the Lightning/USB-C port. Use a 5-point pentalobe driver.

3

Heat the edges (60–80°C)

Use a heat gun or iOpener to soften the adhesive seal around the screen.

4

Suction + pry to open

Apply a suction cup near the bottom edge. Insert a thin pick and run it around the seal.

5

Disconnect the battery first

Before touching any cables, always disconnect the battery connector.

6

Transfer brackets & earpiece

Move your Face ID, earpiece mesh, and front camera assembly to the new screen.

7

Connect and test before sealing

Power on with connectors attached but not sealed. Test touch, Face ID, cameras, and brightness.

Tools you'll need

Buyer's Guide

Third-party screen vs Apple Repair — which is right for you?

Apple's official screen replacement service is excellent but expensive. Third-party screens offer serious value if you know what to look for.

Apple Official Repair

Guaranteed quality, True Tone pairing, warranty intact. But costs $200–$400+ and requires booking an appointment. Best if your device is under AppleCare.

Third-party OLED

95% of the Apple experience at 40–60% of the cost. Excellent colour and touch. True Tone may not work. Ideal for out-of-warranty devices or budget-conscious users.

Budget LCD

Works well for basic use. Noticeably different from original on OLED models. Best for iPhone 8, SE, XR, or 11 where LCD was the original technology.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before buying a replacement iPhone screen.

What is the difference between LCD and OLED iPhone screens?
LCD screens use a single backlight shining through a liquid crystal panel. They cannot produce true black and have lower contrast ratios. OLED screens have individual light-emitting pixels — each one turns off for true black. OLED panels are thinner, more vibrant, and power-efficient. Apple switched to OLED starting with the iPhone X in 2017.
How much does an iPhone screen replacement cost?
iPhone screen replacement costs range widely: budget LCD Incell screens start at $15–$45, third-party OLED panels cost $50–$140, and OEM Apple refurbished screens run $100–$250. Newer models like the iPhone 15 Pro or 16 Pro command higher prices due to component complexity. DIY replacement saves you the labour cost of a repair shop.
Will replacing my iPhone screen void the warranty?
Using a third-party screen or self-repair may affect your Apple warranty or AppleCare+ coverage. Apple's official policy is that unauthorised repairs can void the limited warranty for the specific component repaired. If your device is still under warranty, consider Apple's official repair service. For out-of-warranty devices, third-party repair is typically the best value.
Is it worth getting an OEM iPhone screen replacement?
Yes — if you want an identical-to-factory experience. OEM screens preserve True Tone, full brightness, P3 wide colour, and Face ID/Touch ID accuracy. However, Hard OLED third-party screens offer 90–95% of the OEM experience at significantly lower cost, making them the best value for most users.
Can I replace my iPhone screen myself?
Yes. iPhone screen replacements are one of the most documented DIY repairs. You'll need a pentalobe screwdriver, suction cup, plastic picks, and ideally a heat source. iPhones 8 through 12 are beginner-friendly. iPhone 13 onwards requires more care due to Face ID cable routing and True Tone pairing. Many kits on Amazon include all necessary tools.
Why does my replacement screen look different from the original?
Third-party screens — especially LCD replacements on OLED-original phones — will have slightly different colour calibration, lower maximum brightness, and potentially a slightly different white point. OLED replacements are much closer to the original. If you want a pixel-perfect match, choose an OEM refurbished screen.
What is True Tone and will I lose it?
True Tone is Apple's technology that automatically adjusts your display's colour temperature based on ambient lighting. It requires a calibrated OEM panel paired with the True Tone data stored in the original display's EEPROM chip. Third-party screens lose True Tone unless the original flex cable is transplanted, which is an advanced modification. OEM refurbished screens retain True Tone fully.
What's the best iPhone screen replacement brand?
Look for screens from reputable suppliers such as Premium (Incell), Tianma, BOE, or Samsung panels (for OLED). On Amazon, brands like FixTronics, WireSwipe, and Drfonix have strong review records. Always check for return policies and warranties. Our finder links directly to highly-rated Amazon listings for each technology type.
